‘Human Rights in the Community’ is an exciting three year project (April 2010 – 13) that aims to empower individuals and communities with human rights language and tools. From BIHR’s experience of working with communities, we know that human rights knowledge can be dynamite in the hands of individuals, their families, carers and advocates. It shifts the balance of power, increasing people’s confidence to challenge decisions, negotiate solutions and have a greater say in the provision of public services in their community.
What will the project do?
The project will directly support local community groups, through pilot projects in the South East (including London), North East and North West England regions. At the same time we will also work with wide range of regional and national support bodies, to ensure mainstreaming, sustainability and national legislative and policy impact. Throughout the project we will road-test and produce a wide range of innovative tools, models and evidence of lessons learned.
Over the three year period, the key project activities will be:
- A series of ‘information days’ in the South East, North East and North West of England. These took place in June and July 2010 - report available soon.
- Supporting local community groups in three English regions to develop pilot human rights advocacy projects. The pilot groups have all been selected and information about them will be available shortly.
- An interactive web resource that will act as a ‘one-stop-shop’ of human rights information as well as a forum for sharing learning.
- A series of open training courses for frontline groups and community activists.
- A comprehensive evidence-gathering and evaluation framework.
- Building human rights knowledge and expertise among local, regional and national infrastructure organisations.
Details of the project activities will be updated on this page as the project develops.
