As the 47 Member States of the Council of Europe adopt the much-anticipated Brighton Declaration, the British Institute of Human Rights welcomes the clear message that Governments must do more to protect human rights in their own countries and welcomes the UK’s promotion of the Human Rights Act.

BIHR responds to emerging events at the Brighton Conference where 47 Council of Europe members are discussing potential reforms to the European Court of Human Rights. Commenting on proceedings Stephen Bowen said "an independent and authoritative Court" must lie "at the heart of the system".
