# British Institute of Human Rights (BIHR) > BIHR is a UK-wide charity founded in 1970 whose mission is to make universal human rights real in the UK. It supports people, communities, civil society organisations, and public bodies to understand and use the Human Rights Act (HRA) in everyday life and work. BIHR is the leading provider of human rights capacity-building and consultancy to the third and public sectors in the UK. BIHR works across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Its work spans direct community support, professional training, policy advocacy, and public legal education.
