Human Rights Day 2024: Open Letter
On Human Rights Day 2024, we co-ordinated an open letter to the Prime Minister and political leaders, signed by over 70 organisations from across all four nations of the UK. The letter calls on politicians to reaffirm the UK’s commitment to its human rights obligations, both nationally and internationally, and to make their own commitments to supporting a culture of respect for human rights across the UK.
The letter comes during the 75th anniversary year of the Council of Europe – the organisation responsible for the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and of which the UK was a founding member. The letter recognises the formation of the Council of Europe and the ECHR as marking “a coming together of countries across Europe to solidify their commitment to the UDHR and to protecting universal human rights.”
The letter says:
“This is the same system that makes human rights real not just on the
international stage but in all the many communities that form the beating heart of the UK. The collaboration between social worker and client to create a person-centred care plan; a family’s advocacy on behalf of their loved one; the interpreter facilitating conversations between public body workers and people accessing services – these are all part of what brings human rights to life."
Easy Read Letter
We also created an Easy Read version of the letter and a video version of the letter, with kind support from members of our RITES Committee and Pembrokeshire People First, Bomoko NI, All Wales People First, Cwm Taf People First, Parent & Carer Alliance CIC and Learning Disability England.
