Communities Support Solution

African Women Empowerment Forum

As part of our communities’ co-design programme in 2024, BIHR partnered with the African Women Empowerment Forum to co-design a human rights support solution. Our organisations have worked together to create a booklet that can be used by women migrants and asylum seekers in the UK to learn more about their human rights and how they relate to their experiences with public services.

Please use and share this resource with anyone who could benefit from knowing their rights or the rights of people they support.

Collaborating with the African Women Empowerment Forum

The African Women Empowerment Forum (AWEF) is dedicated to empowering African women in the UK and beyond. We provide a platform for social interaction, integration, and skill development through various programs.

This resource was made in collaboration with the staff and members of AWEF over the course of six months. It includes real life stories and issues that have been provided by AWEF that cover the human rights issues that African refugees, asylum seekers and migrants face in the UK.

The Resource

Here is just a small preview of some of the resource pages:

African Women Empowerment Forum Said:

"These stories collectively illustrate the multifaceted challenges faced by migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees in the UK. They reveal potential human rights issues, from family separation and privacy intrusions to discrimination, unsafe living conditions, and restrictions on work and possessions. These accounts underscore the urgent need for policy reforms and improved support systems to protect the human rights and dignity of these vulnerable populations."

Working with the African Women Empowerment Forum

African Women Empowerment Forum provides support to women across the UK to empower women in their communities through outreach, workshops and powerful projects such as a women recovery action plan, family mentoring and advocacy and leadership. It has been a great opportunity to work with AWEF to create a new resource that brings a human rights-based approach to their work.

Working with AWEF, we decided to create a booklet that raised awareness for women in the UK about their human rights and how they are relevant to their everyday lives. We did this through combining our human rights expertise with real life testimonies gathered by AWEF.

We hope that this resource will build on AWEF's work to empower women in their communities in the UK by having knowledge and understanding of their human rights.
