Our Strategic Aims 2026–2031
Our strategic aims put our model for making everyday justice happen into practice through the strategic implementation of the Human Rights Act.
We work across three connected levels of change.
Securing immediate justice by supporting people, communities, and civil society to use the Human Rights Act to challenge poor decisions and secure better outcomes in their lives.
Improving institutional practice by working with public bodies to embed human rights in decision-making, services, and accountability.
Driving systems reform through law and policy influencing work informed by evidence from the real-world implementation of human rights.
Together, these levels ensure that learning from rights in practice does not stop at individual cases or local change but helps improve public services, shape policy and law reform, ensuring human rights protections can secure everyday justice.
We strengthen the capacity of people, communities, and organisations across the UK to understand, claim, and embed human rights in their work and daily lives, We provide the information, tools, support, and programmes that translate legal protections into practical action. This area of our work prioritises grassroots groups who are closest to rights issues yet often furthest from specialist support.
We enable systems change by providing public bodies and service providers with the tools, support, and programmes to integrate human rights into decision-making, amplifying on-the-ground experience to ensure the Human Rights Act and ECHR are central to policy, service design, and law across health, care, education, welfare, and housing.
We generate, capture, and share real-life examples of human rights in action, using storytelling as a strategic tool that connects lived experience to advocacy, parliamentary engagement, and cross-sector alliances. This strengthens the legitimacy of human rights law and influencing decision-makers to uphold and embed it.
We build a UK-wide Human Rights Act infrastructure connecting community groups, civil society, and public bodies so that learning and evidence flow across sectors — actively supporting alliances that defend and advance the HRA and ECHR, sharing expertise and evidence rather than working in isolation.
We're committed to positioning BIHR as the UK's trusted Human Rights Act practice and policy authority — diversifying funding streams, prioritising multi-year core support, investing in our team's development and wellbeing, and enhancing digital infrastructure and evaluation to measure and communicate our impact.
